Will Video Consultations Work for You?

Telemedicine is healthcare delivered from afar. This can include phone calls, text/email, pictures, and (importantly) video chat. Throw in added extras like research-validated assessment questionnaires and some self- and/or partner-assisted techniques and you have an assessment that has shown to be safe and effective. But what about treatment?

The Process

Remote pain management is possible, necessary, and has been used for many conditions. Remote pain management involves guiding pain relief self-care, reducing pain triggers and causes, and rehabilitating the area with supervised mobility and strengthening exercises.

Clinical practice guidelines have many options for treatments that can be delivered from a distance and help get you better. Physical contact is helpful but NOT essential to getting better. So, is remote management right for you?

The Pros and Cons

Whether you are comfortable with telemedicine is a personal decision. It will not be appropriate for every case. You will also need a computer or mobile device with video chat (Zoom is free & preferable), internet (>3mpbs), and a private space to chat/move for 30-60mins. However, for many cases, I think it will do a good job of managing your pain and getting you healthier.
